Planning a Wedding in Austin? Start Here!

November 2, 2022

If you’re planning a wedding in Austin, then you know how many options there are to choose from when it comes to every detail of your wedding day. The great news is that curating your ideal wedding is possible with Austin’s wide range of choices. The not so great part is trying to juggle all of the planning aspects of a wedding and narrowing down your options!

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the planning process, or don’t know where to begin, start here!

Create a Budget

It’s tempting to begin planning and researching services before you’ve solidified a budget. However, this should be your first step when planning a wedding. By creating a budget first, it can help you narrow down your choices (ie. eliminate services, venues, and decor outside of your budget), and focus on the items you need or highly desire on your wedding day.

Identify Priorities

When you have a budget, you can start focusing on your priorities. Again, it can be easy to get lost in all the things you want, but really identify the items that are a high priority – versus something you could adjust your budget or expectations for.

Every couple will have different priorities. Some want to splurge on food, while others want to invest on videography. There is no right answer! Here are some items to consider (we suggest ranking these items and seeing how they fit in your budget).

  • Food
  • Music & Entertainment
  • Florals
  • Signage
  • Decor
  • Photography
  • Videography
  • Wedding Dress and Groom’s Attire
  • Cake
  • Lodging

There are more items to consider, but this list covers many of the common wedding elements. You may also have to consider travel and lodging if your guests are traveling for your wedding in Austin.

Book a Planner

As you begin planning, you might feel overwhelmed and wish you had someone to guide you through the process. If your budget allows, hiring a planner for your wedding in Austin can actually help you better stick to your budget and fully understand your options.

When you hire a local planner, you are bringing someone onto your team that has connections and relationships in the Austin area. They know what venues, caterers, and vendors will work for your wedding aesthetic and budget.

Clarify Your Guest Count

Having an idea of your guest count before you book a venue or vendors will save you money and stress later. You don’t need to have a firm number, but you should have an idea of how many people you will be inviting. This helps your vendors give you proper estimates, and it keeps everyone on the same page in terms of expectations.

Source a Venue

When you are looking for a venue, make sure you have your budget and guest count in mind. It can be tempting to splurge on the venue, but consider your priority list before you make a commitment.

Also, don’t hesitate to show up to the wedding venue with questions. Ask the property manager what is included in their pricing, how much time you have the venue, and what items they provide vs. what you will be responsible for, for example chairs and bars. This can greatly impact your budget.
